The Legend of Buddhist Alms Bowl
The alms bowl (in Thai “Bat”) is a necessary tool for a Buddhist monk primarily used to collect food from laity in the morning alms round, and also a reminder of the renunciation from worldly life to complete monkhood.
After Prince Siddhartha attained the perseverance of becoming Buddha for 49 days, the two merchant brothers offered him food with pure faith. Although Buddha was welcome to get the offered food, he was concerned about the container for it. Buddha’s concern was heard by the four world guardian angels. So they all brought their bowls to Buddha to use as a container. When Buddha received those bowls, he made a wish to merge them into one. That was the beginning of the Buddhist alms bowl.
