Belief about Naga:
Naga (Thai: Phaya Nak), a serpent being in Buddhist mythology is a symbol of “wealth” believed to worship will bring agricultural fertility (because it can access the land and the water) and plenty of fortune.
Thai people believe Naga live in Mekong River. The wonderful thing by Naga is the rise of light balls that occurs every year on a full moon night when Buddhist Lent is over (15th waxing moon of 11th month according to lunar calendar). People believe Naga produces light balls to worship Buddha. That night, Naga will gather at the center of Mekong River and produce many light balls going up in the sky.
Pa Kam Chanod is a holy place with its land like the island surrounded by river and full of palm trees called ‘Ton Chanod’ (about 200 meters tall), located in Ban Dung District, Udon Thani Province. This place is believed to be home of Naga, the great snake in Buddhism and other mysteries. It is amazing that this place is never flooded although near area is.
Today, Pa Kam Chanod becomes the Buddhist place where monks come for meditation and preaching laity. Moreover, it has ‘Pu Sri Suttho’ (the king Naga) statue, and ‘Ya Sri Pathumma’ statue (his queen).
Pu Sri Suttho and Ya Pathumma are highly revered Naga in Thailand (Pu in Thai ‘grandpa’, Ya ‘grandma’). Worshiping the two Naga is believed to bring great fortune and fulfillment—guaranteed by many worshipers.
