Belief about Naga:
Naga (Thai: Phaya Nak), a serpent being in Buddhist mythology is a symbol of “wealth” believed to worship will bring agricultural fertility (because it can access the land and the water) and plenty of fortune.
Thai people believe Naga live in Mekong River. The wonderful thing by Naga is the rise of light balls that occurs every year on a full moon night when Buddhist Lent is over (15th waxing moon of 11th month according to lunar calendar). People believe Naga produces light balls to worship Buddha. That night, Naga will gather at the center of Mekong River and produce many light balls going up in the sky.
‘Lek Nam Phi’ is a name of holy iron ore in Thailand having been used to make swords and knives since Ayutthaya era. This iron ore was named after Amphoe (district) Nam Phi in Uttaradit Province where it is found. Lek Nam Phi is taken out of “the well”; a hollow on the ground where people dig for this iron ore. Lek Nam Phi is believed a sacred material supernaturally capable of protecting person from dangers, black magic, spirits and any bad invisible thing. People say Lek Nam Phi is a brother of Lek Lai because they have prominent safeguarding power.
“Mai Ngiw Dam” is the longtime wood in Thai belief praised as “King of Wood” with all black skin and believed to be taken care by dryad. It grows in the deep forest where is full of spirits and mysteries—hard for ordinary people to reach except magical ones. When it reaches the proper time, spirit in the tree will depart and leave the tree itself for someone who will take it beneficially for Buddhism. Gurus say the wood from this tree is powerful by itself and can increase power of amulet very much. So, people use it as material for amulets such as figurines or a handle and sheath of knifes or swords. Said to be prominent in protection (from black magic, spirits and dangers) and in wealth.
