The History of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep:
Suthep itself is a district of western Chiang Mai city and one that gets its name from the adjacent mountain (doi means mountain in northern Thai), and the temple on the summit—Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, is found on the mountainside. The mountain, plus neighbouring Doi Pui, form Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. In terms of the impressive temple, construction on Wat Doi Suthep began in 1386 and according to popular legend, the temple was built to hang a piece of bone from the Buddha’s shoulder.
One of those bones was mounted on a sacred white elephant (an important symbol in Thailand) who then climbed Doi Suthep mountain and stopped near the peak. After trumpeting three times, the elephant laid down and gently passed away in the jungle. The place where he lay is now the site of where Doi Suthep’s temple was founded.
The Biography of Phra Krapa Srivichai:
Phra Krapa Srivichai is a venerable person in Buddhism. KB was born on 21 June BE2411 (CE1868) at LamPhun Province. KB was novice at the age of 17 for studying Dharma and Buddhist way uncle until the age of 20 when he was finally ordained as a monk. KB one of the famous guru monks who have been created many famous amulets collectors. KB has deep knowledge of Visha and is highly respected in Thailand. His amulet is very famous in protection and wealth.
In the past, it was very difficult for people to reach the summit of Suthep Mountain. The road was narrow and bumpy, climbing through jungle. On foot, the journey took about five hours to reach the summit. There was a well-known saying in the old days that reaching the pagoda was limited to those strongly devoted. In the year B.E 2477 (CE1934) Krapa Srivichai the most revered monk of Lanna Thai, came to Chiang Mai to initiate the road construction project. Chow Keo Navarat, ruler of Chiang Mai, performed the groundbreaking ceremony. The ceremony took place at the front of the modern Chiang Mai Zoo in November BE2477 (CE1934).
When the news of the construction project spread out to other parts of the North, the Buddhist people came from all directions to contribute their labor and effort without. There were from 3,000 to 4,000 people each day. They came from many other Provinces, including Uttaradit and Phitsanuloke. Even hill tribe men came to Chiangmai to volunteer to work. Because there were more people than needed, Krapa Srivichai requested that workers from each village should work on only 50 feet of road. However, due to the large number of volunteers, the monk limited the construction to only 10 or 15 feet per village.
Krapa Srivichai passed away on the 20th February BE 2481 (CE1938), at the age of 60 years. His bones were placed in the stupa at Wat Chammadevi.
