King Rama V or King Chulalongkorn (20 September 1853 – 23 October 1910) was the fifth monarch of Siam under the House of Chakri. He was known to the Siamese of his time as Phra Phuttha Chao Luang (the Royal Buddha). His reign was characterized by the modernization of Siam, governmental and social reforms, and territorial concessions to the British and French. As Siam was threatened by Western expansionism, Chulalongkorn, through his policies and acts, managed to save Siam from colonization. All his reforms were dedicated to ensuring Siam's survival in the face of Western colonialism, so that Chulalongkorn earned the epithet Phra Piya Maharat (the Great Beloved King).
About Guru Monk:
Luang Por Jaran (Pali: Thittathammo) or Phra Thep Singhaburajarn (15 Aug. 1928 – 25 Jan. 2016) was a famous preacher in Thailand and a former abbot of Wat Umpawan in Singburi Province. LP Jaran is esteemed by many Thai people with his teaching about Theory of Karmic from his experience and beneficial work for Buddhism. Besides, LP Jaran was always kind to everyone no matter rich or poor they are.
LP Jaran was born on 15 August 1928. When being a child, he lived with grandmother.
When LP Jaran was a student, he didn’t concentrate on studying at all, but liked to catch fish and birds with friends, so he moved to several schools. LP Jaran was very naughty even though his grandmother always taught him. When his grandmother was sick, she had LP Jaran offer food to monk for her. Instead of doing that, LP Jaran got food to his friend and lied to his grandmother. One day, monk visited his grandmother, so she knew the truth and told LP Jaran what he did was sin.
Turning point of LP Jaran to repent himself happened after he had committed killing chicken for food. After chickens died, he had suffered from stomachache for 3 years. It was very bad that LP
Jaran vowed to chicken spirits if he got over he would dedicate himself to goodness all his life. With his strong determination, soon his illness was gone. LP Janran got ordained as Buddhist monk on 15 July 1948 (age 20).
