Myth about Naga
Naga is also intertwined with the history of Buddha, as seen in various legends where they play crucial roles in protecting and assisting the enlightened one. The story of Phaya Moot-cha-lin, the great Naga who provides shelter to Buddha under the Indian Oaktree, exemplifies the deep connection between Naga and Buddhism.

History of Wat Phaya Wat:

Wat Phaya Wat is an important ancient temple located in the southwest of Nan Province. Appears along the city walls (ditches) enclosing the south and the west of the temple. Archaeologists call it ‘Wiang Phaya Wat’. The temple remains ancient archaeological sites, especially the pagoda. Legend says Queen ‘Camadevi’ of Hariphunchai Kingdom had been already established and then the temple was built in 1538 BE (995 CE). Also appears in the history of Nan that King Rama II of Rattanakosin era had a message to King ‘Sumon Thewaraj’ of Nan to appoint abbot of Wat Phaya Wat ‘Thipphawongsa’ as the patriarch of the city of Nan in 1821.

Wat Phaya Wat installed the ancient Buddha image named ‘Phrajow Fon Saneha’ the Rain Buddha which is highly respected by the villagers. During a dry period; the rain did not come seasonally, the villagers held the ritual for the rain and also built the Rain Buddha. When there was no rain, people invited the Rain Buddha to bathe in the river so that the rain could come seasonally.

Another legend says ‘Phrajow Fon Saneha’ was the Buddha image of Queen Camadevi of Hariphunchai Kingdom and then belonged to King Tilokaraj of Wiang Phing City that he led the troops to fight for Lamphun City. Destruction of the war, the city and temples were burned to the ground. After the flame had calmed down, it appeared miraculously that one temple was not burned down. The King came to see and found the Buddha image.
