Buddha, Pang Harm Samoot
This is a posture of Buddha called Pang Harm Samut. This posture, Buddha is standing with his hands up at his chest like stopping something.
This posture has a legend. After Buddha was enlightened, he traveled around to propagate Buddhism. Buddha stopped at home of Chadin, ascetics who strongly believed in supernatural power. Buddha knew that leading them to be a Buddhist was not easy, so he had to show Chadin his power.
There was home of great snake near home of Chadin. Buddha asked Chadin to stay with great snake. Chadin felt excited because the great snake was so powerful. They thought Buddha might be attacked by great snake. Next day, Chadin came to see Buddha, they were very amazed because they saw great snake coiling near Buddha and Buddha was completely safe.
Another wonderful thing, there was massive flood from all directions, but Buddha could stop the water in posture that he stood and raised his hands at his chest called Pang Harm Samoot.
From two events, Chadin became obedient to Buddha. After that, they became Buddha disciples and got ordained as Buddhist monks.
About Temple:
Wat Songdharm Woravihan is an old temple in Samut Prakan Province built in the reign of King Rama 2 around 2358 BE (1815 CE), the same time of building Nakhon Khuean Khan city (Phra Pradaeng district nowadays).
King Rama 2 would like to build this temple for Mon people, an ethnic group of Burma. Those Mon people moved from Pathum Thani Province. At first, the temple was made of wood. Then, King Rama 2 ordered Gommuen Sakdiphonsep to be head of building Nakhon Khuean Kan city. He built the fortress in the city. King Rama 2 ordered Gommuen Sakdiphonsep to place the temple in the area of the fortress.
In 2400 BE (1857 CE), the reign of King Rama 4, he renovated the temple. The temple was rebuilt in bricks and cement. When temple was completed, the king named it Wat Damrongratchatham and later changed as Wat Songdharm.
The renovation in the reign of King Rama 4, Wat Songdharm was developed in many ways. The temple is beautiful especially the chapel (Ubosod) where has the main elegant Buddha image King Rama 4 brought.
In the past, Wat Songdharm was the place of Thue Nam Phipat Sattaya, holy ceremony that new government officers must drink water and vow that they will not betray to the king and the nation. In fact, every year, Thai kings come to Wat Songdharm to do Kathin (a kind of Buddhist merit event).
