Regarding to Kathin Ceremony.
The presentation of “Kathin” robes held throughout the kingdom after the three-month Lent and it usually falls between mid-October and mid-November. The presentation of “Kathin” robes or “Tod Kathin” is a great occasion of merit making for laymen and it is observed as a way of paying gratitude to monks for maintaining and propagating the Lord Buddha’s Teachings and practicing His tenets. The ceremony is purely a Buddhist observance and is deeply religious in character.
Over 2500 years ago, the Buddha taught that those in search of spiritual treasure must free themselves of worldly ties. He recognized that piling up worldly possessions or mourning their absences is the cause of so much care and frustration as to constitute severe impediments to spiritual progress, so He enjoined the monks never to touch gold or silver and to retain no individual possessions beyond a set of garments and a few daily necessities, such as a razor and a needle. Consequently, Buddhist monks rely entirely upon the laity to provide these and the rest of their simple needs. In Thailand, this presents no problems, for the laymen, besides feeling themselves under deep obligation to the monks, believe that making offerings is a certain means of gaining “merit,” so they delight in giving generously.
Offerings made to monks other than food are of two kinds: (1)cloth for garments together with the handful of necessities which monks are allowed to own individually; (2)whatever is required for their communal use, including a large number of household items such as brooms and soap as well as such modest luxuries as teapots and sometimes electric fans. All gifts in this second category become the joint property of the monastery to which they are offered; those in both categories are generally offered at Tod Kathin.
Following is the usual procedure of the Kathin:
In the first place the donor has to declare that they are veritable Kathin robes. The monks assembled must be not less than five in number. The motion and resolution must be made in a proper place, i.e., within the “Sima,” or boundary stones of the Temples. After the announcement the presiding monk intimates the fact to the assembly, refers to the “Vinaya” or regulations of the Order wherein qualifications of the recipient are clearly specified, and asks the assembly to nominate a recipient. A senior monk then proposes a recipient, generally the abbot of the monastery, and asks the assembly to voice the assent if the proposal is agreed to and, if not, to keep silent. The assembly then generally gives the unanimous assent “Sadhu.” All these proceedings are first made in Thai and later in Pali. It is to be noted that the motion in Pali has to be made twice before the resolution is adopted. The recipient cannot dispose of the Kathin gift in any way.
Apart from its intrinsic religious significance, the real cultural importance of the ceremony cannot be overlooked. It is an undeniable fact that Buddhism constitutes a stalwart pillar of peaceful progress in Thailand and should continue to be so if supported and upheld as state religion by the people. It is not too presumptuous to remark that to stem the flow of communism into Buddhist countries by no means is more effective than intensifying the propagation of the Lord Buddha’s Teachings, to give the people a clear idea of what is right and wrong. The UN through its agencies such as WHOM, UNICEF, UNESCO, is now waging the war against this disrupting force in certain forms etc. The work done by these organizations is absolutely in line with the Lord Buddha’s Teachings viz. “Metta” (Kindness) and “Karuna” (Compassion), which are the twin pillars of world peace.
