Lanarkshire schoolboy Dean Ford belongs to one of the most successful kickboxing gyms in the UK. His training partner at the Rivals Gym in Newmains is fellow Hall of Famer Scott Allan, a double WKA title-winner at Huelva last year (2009). As for Dean, he came within a whisker of picking up a third world crown for the gym, losing a split decision in his Full Contact final where, as he says, he gave it everything he had. In the previous two years Dean picked up bronze medals in the WKA championships, so 2010 could be the year when he turns bronze and silver into gold when the WKA championships are in what he proudly calls ‘my home country of Scotland’.
He may have just missed out on World titles, but Dean’s dominance at his age and weight in the UK has been total, as shown by his string of British titles. Unfortunately he and Scott, having been in adjacent weight categories for several years, have now both landed in the 55kg bracket. For the 2010 WKA British championships in Birmingham Dean took the brave decision to fight in the 60kg class – and dropped a close decision to his heavier opponent.
He began kickboxing in February 2005 at the age of 11 and has since had 20 fights. His fairly modest record of 11 wins and 9 losses is largely due to defeats in World Championships. As an outstanding junior Dean has a big year coming up, with the WKA European and World Championships close to home in France and Scotland.
Dean’s first ambition in kickboxing should, we all hope, be attainable this year: to be World Champion as a junior – though his and Scott’s weights will be a factor. His next, to repeat the feat as a senior, is rather more difficult and will certainly take a little longer! His life in 2010 is likely to be fairly crowded, with his studies for his Highers jostling for time alongside his training, but Dean is intelligent, level-headed and dedicated enough to cope.
Yet another champion to choose Hero Sporto kit from Billionmore, Dean echoes many others when he says, ‘they design products exactly how you want them.’ And in turn Billionmore is immensely proud of Dean’s achievements and is just as keen as he is to see another title belt in his possession.
