At 13 Cassie Murdoch is already so feared an opponent that her major difficulty is finding opponents willing to face her in the ring. During the WKA Championships in Huelva in November 2009, Cassie was ready to take on all comers, but no fewer than three contenders (a Commonwealth Muay Thai champion, a Kickboxing Gold Medallist and a national champion two years older and 5 kg heavier than Cassie) all refused to fight her, the 15-year-old’s coach declaring that Cassie was far too powerful for his girl. Eventually Cassie won the Gold Medal by default, when her opponent was disqualified for refusing to fight – a highly unsatisfactory outcome, though none could doubt that the Gold was well deserved. From her exploits in Huelva, Cassie secured WKA’s sanction of her meeting with Rebecca Caslin (TMAS Gym) on December 12th as a World Title bout. Cassie won a hard-fought battle in Glasgow over 5 rounds to secure her second world title in 6 weeks – a phenomenal achievement!
Cassie and her father are both great enthusiasts for Hero kit and equipment and the Billionmore website. She has trained in Muay Thai since she was 5 years old. She trains at the North Ayrshire Muay Thai gym in Saltcoats, a small seaside town on the west coast of Scotland. She has had only 6 fights because there are not many young girls to fight and her reputation as a very strong fighter means that it is impossible to match her in Scotland and very difficult in the UK. Her 6 fights have included 5 victories, but the other (a ‘no contest’) reveals most about Cassie’s problems. The victory awarded to Jade Munro, at that time the WKA British champion, in a Commonwealth title fight, was so shocking that in the end Cassie received the winner’s cup, but not the Commonwealth title.
In 2010 Cassie has many tournaments to look forward to: the British nationals in March, the Europeans in May, the WKA World Championships near to home in Edinburgh in October and the IFMA World Championships in Thailand in November. She is now looking for sponsors for these various events and also opponents between the championships, so any club with a good 13-year-old 45 kg girl fighter (whether in the UK or Europe) would be welcomed with open arms on stewart_murdoch@yahoo.co.uk.
