Maria Pantazi, who has the
evocative nickname ‘Iron Barbie’, lives in Athens and took up fighting
as recently as 2006 at the age of 27. Before that, she says, she was
working too many hours a day in an office and teaching aerobics! Now
her life has changed completely. She works as a Human Resources Officer
for the biggest Greek investment group (MIG), but in addition to this
and her work as an aerobics teacher she now trains youngsters at the
Zen Fighting Club. After that there is two or three hours hard training
with Manos Raphailides!
With so much hard work and
dedication Maria deserves her reputation as one of Greece’s top
professionals, taking part in big competitions at home and abroad.
Maria is all-round
sportswoman, keen on sports like snowboarding and wakeboarding, but she
has so much love for fighting that she has little time for other
sports: as she says, ‘when they hold up your hand when the fight is
over, you are the happiest person in the world!’ Maria was especially
happy when she beat a German girl in the WKA finals in Berlin in 2008 –
she claims that she felt nervous, but, nervous or not, she is always
aggressive in the ring.
Maria
was the overwhelming favourite for the WKA Championships in Huelva,
Spain, in October/November 2009, an event covered by
www.billionmore.com, but, sadly, the Greek star was beaten by American
Lindsay Scheer in the final. Maria soon regained her confidence after
that defeat and won a tournament in Greece the following weekend. Now
she is looking forward to the K1 championships and, especially, a
prestige professional title fight in April 2010.
Like many successful fighters
Maria always wears Hero kit as a matter of course and, in turn, Hero
and Billionmore are proud of what she has achieved.
