Myth about Naga
Naga is also intertwined with the history of Buddha, as seen in various legends where they play crucial roles in protecting and assisting the enlightened one. The story of Phaya Moot-cha-lin, the great Naga who provides shelter to Buddha under the Indian Oaktree, exemplifies the deep connection between Naga and Buddhism.

History of Phra Kaew Butsarakam:

Phra Kaew Butsarakam, an old Buddha image of the 22nd - 23th century. Marvelous with a glass of honey (yellow) lap 3 inches wide, 4 inches high is a major Buddha image in Ubon Ratchathani.

According to legend, Phra Kaew Butsarakam was the property of Jow Pang Kam, the governor of ‘Nakhon Khuean Khan Kab Kaew Bua Ban’ (Nong Bua Lam Phu) city, and handed down to the son of Jow Pang Kam. Later in 2314 B.E. (1771 C.E.), that city was taken over by Phra Jow Siri Boonsarn of Vientiane (Laos). The son of Phra Jow Pang Kam died in the war. His son ‘Phra Jow Wor’ (Phra Woraratchaphakdi) and his crew ran away to Ban Don Mod Daeng village, Ubon Ratchathani and also invited Phra Kaew Butsarakam there.

When Phra Jow Wor died, Thao Kam Phong  (Phra Pathum Worarat Suriyawong) a brother built the monastery as the first temple. Also built the hall to install Phra Kaew Butsarakam.
During the reign of King Rama 5 of Rattanakosin ordered his staff to supervise the provinces that made Ratchabut Kamnoo, the city governor of Laos at that time afraid that those staff from Siam (Thailand) might take over Phra Kaew Butsarakam, so he moved Phra Kaew Butsarakam to Ban Wang Kang Hung.

Until Uparat Tho (originator of Na Ubon family) built Wat Si Thong (now is Wat Sri Ubon Ratanaram), so he invited Phra Kaew Butsarakam to install at Wat Sri Ubon Ratanaram until these days. In normal time, Phra Kaew Butsarakam is well kept in the glass cabinet only. But in Songkran festival, the temple takes Phra Kaew Butsarakam for people to water.
