Info:
In Thailand, there is a belief and reverence for Phra Mae Torranee (Mother Earth), who is also known as Phra Sri Wasunthara or Phra Mae Torranee Bhiab Mwy Phom. She is regarded as the goddess of the earth and is present in the legends of Brahmanism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. The belief is that the 'earth' is the origin of all things in the world, akin to a 'mother' who nurtures life. She is celebrated as the goddess who sustains the world and symbolizes fertility. Many places and institutions create effigies of Phra Mae Torranee to honor her.
Phra Mae Torranee also holds significance in Buddhist history. It is said that on the night of the Buddha’s enlightenment, the demon Mara tried to disrupt his meditation, claiming the throne for himself. The Buddha called upon the earth, referring to it as his witness. There was then a great sound, and the ground shook. Phra Mae Torranee manifested as a witness and expressed her support by showing water drawn from her hair. This miracle demonstrated the good deeds the Buddha had performed in past lives, filling the ground with water until it became oceanic, causing Mara and his army to disperse. This event led to the creation of the Buddha statue in the Mara Victory posture.
The belief in worshipping Phra Mae Torranee spread from India to Thailand, largely due to the influence of Buddhist scriptures. It is common to say, “Before doing anything, invoke and seek permission from Phra Mae Torranee first.” This is because everything in the world arises from the earth. For instance, when constructing buildings, one must ask for permission and forgiveness, as the act affects the ground from the moment the foundation is laid. Similarly, farmers often perform rituals to pay respects to Phra Mae Torranee and pray for success in their crops.
In the northeastern region of Thailand, there are specific practices related to Phra Mae Torranee, such as the “Heart of the Earth Takhut” from the Samdej Loon lineage in Champasak. There are also rituals involving the catching of elephants that incorporate invocations to Mother Earth. In the northern region, there are many traditional ceremonies relating to Phra Mae Torranee.
