Myth about Naga
Naga is also intertwined with the history of Buddha, as seen in various legends where they play crucial roles in protecting and assisting the enlightened one. The story of Phaya Moot-cha-lin, the great Naga who provides shelter to Buddha under the Indian Oaktree, exemplifies the deep connection between Naga and Buddhism.

Both Buddha images are highly respected by people in Ratchaburi Province.

Luang Pho Tam Jai or Phra Phutthacaimongkol is the holy Buddha image of Wat Phaya Mai, Ratchaburi Province. ‘Tam Jai’ means ‘to make what person wants’ coming from the holiness of Buddha that grant people wishes. The Buddha posture is Marnvichai (early Ayutthaya art), height 2 meters, lap width 1.70 meters with the bright charming appearance and a happy face that makes us think Buddha always smiles at us.

This temple was formerly named ‘Wat Phaya Mai’ because around BE2423 (CE 1880) a man giving himself as a chamberlain was later given the rank as ‘Phaya’ (a high-ranking officer of royal court) and he built the temple as his gratitude to hometown. When temple finished, people called ‘Wat Phaya Mai’ that means ‘a new high-ranking officer’ and distorted to ‘Wat Phaya Maai’.

The profile of this Buddha is not evidenced. Knowing only this temple has Luang Pho Tam Jai since temple was built. Also is reputed for Buddha’s holiness that having shone brightly even long time. In BE 2511 (CE1968) temple had the last abbot and was no care until BE 2549 (CE 2006) the monk committee appointed LP Adul Sudhammo as the abbot of Wat Phaya Mai. The abbot saw the oldness of temple, but felt impressed with the Luang Pho Tam Jai image that looked shining with gold leaf even in the dark. The abbot persuaded people to make merit and people together helped after seeing the Luang Pho Tam Jai image.

Moreover, there many wonderful stories from people who prayed to Luang Pho Tam Jai such as one who had paralysis long time ago hopefully prayed to Luang Pho Tam for recovery and when he came home he dreamt of old man suggesting him to keep precept and no eating meat. He followed that and soon became normal.

That is why every day many people flow to pay respect to Luang Pho Tam Jai for their wishes and always happy when seeing the smile of Buddha image.
