In the past, it was very difficult for people to reach the summit of Suthep Mountain. The road was narrow and bumpy, climbing through jungle. On foot, the journey took about five hours to reach the summit. There was a well-known saying in the old days that reaching the pagoda was limited to those strongly devoted. In the year B.E 2477 (A.D.1934) Krapa Srivichai the most revered monk of Lanna Thai, came to Chiang Mai to initiate the road construction project. Chow Keo Navarat, ruler of Chiang Mai, performed the groundbreaking ceremony. The ceremony took place at the front of the modern Chiang Mai Zoo in November 2477.
When the news of the construction project spread out to other parts of the North, the Buddhist people came from all directions to contribute their labor and effort without. There were from 3,000 to 4,000 people each day. They came from many other Provinces, including Uttaradit and Phitsanuloke. Even hill tribe men came to Chiangmai to volunteer to work. Because there were more people than needed, Krapa Srivichai requested that workers from each village should work on only 50 feet of road. However, due to the large number of volunteers, the monk limited the construction to only 10 or 15 feet per village.
Krapa Srivichai passed away on the 20th February BE 2481, at the age of 60 years. His bones were placed in the stupa at Wat Chammadevi.
