Myth about Naga
Naga is also intertwined with the history of Buddha, as seen in various legends where they play crucial roles in protecting and assisting the enlightened one. The story of Phaya Moot-cha-lin, the great Naga who provides shelter to Buddha under the Indian Oaktree, exemplifies the deep connection between Naga and Buddhism.

The important Buddha Statues in Thailan

The important Buddha Statues in Thailand

The Buddha Statues of Northern in Thailand

Phra Phuttha Maha Thamma Raja

Phra Phuttha Maha Thamma Raja of Wat Tri Phum located at Phetchaboon province is the most important Buddha image of that area. There were many wonderful stories of this Buddha image being told. Phra Phuttha Maha Thamma Raja is an ancient Buddha image that was found at “Makham Faeb” palace. People discovered that this Buddha image was soaked in water when the statue was discovered. After that people made prayers and invited Phra Phuttha Maha Thamma Raja to stay at Wat Tri Phum on “Sart Thai” Day (Thai Culture Day). The Holy statue was brought into the temple. However, an unexpected thing happened. This Buddha image disappeared suddenly from the temple one day. A search was made and Phra Phuttha Maha Thamma Raja was miraculously found in “Makham Faeb” Palace again, and soaked in water! Nobody would explain this phenomenon till this day. Hence, another sincere invitation was made to the Buddha to stay at Wat Tri Phum and during “Sart Thai” Day, people in Phetchaboon province will invite Phra Phuttha Maha Thamma Raja to soak in water at “Makham Faeb” Palace. The governor of Phetchaboon province would take the lead and personally bring Phra Phuttha Maha Thamma Raja to soak in water by himself and request by prayers to Phra Phuttha Maha Thamma Raja to help people in agriculture. Moreover, during “Songkran” (water festival) people will parade Phra Phuttha Maha Thamma Raja around the city for everyone to respect.

Phra Chao Laan Thong

Phra Chao Laan Thong or Phra Chao Luang of Wat Phra That Lampang Luang located in Lampang province is an ancient Buddha image that people believe was created approximately during B.E.2039 (C.E.1496). Phra Chao Laan Thong was kept in beautiful mondop made from “Mai Sak Thong” (rare tree). Every day, many people would go to Wat Phra That  to respect Phra Chao Laan Thong because they believe Phra Chao Laan Thong can fulfill their wish and many had their wish fulfill. Phra Chao Laan Thong is one of most beautiful Buddha statue of Lampang province.

Phra Buddha Chinnarat

Phra Buddha Chinnarat of Wat PhraSiRattana Mahathat is located in Phitsanulok province. According to historical records, the construction of the great statue is believed to have the combined effort of divine spirits together with the best sculptors. At the same time, King Mahathamaracha Lithai of Sukhothai dynasty also created “Phra Phuttha Chinna Sri” and “Phra Sri Satsada”. Phra Buddha Chinnarat is the most beautiful Buddha image in the whole of Thailand. This ancient Buddha image was created in B.E.1900 (C.E.1357). There were many wonderful stories surrounding Phra Buddha Chinnarat, “Phra Phuttha Chinna Sri” and “Phra Sri Satsada”, during the course of building the Holy statue. It was King Mahathamaracha Lithai who invited craftsmen from Srisatchanalai and Hari Phunchai city to build Phra Buddha Chinnarat project. However, the craftsmen encountered obstacles when building Phra Buddha Chinnarat. The first two attempts were met with failure. Therefore, King Mahathamaracha Lithai prayed to Lord Indra for help in the making of the Buddha. Lord Indra transformed himself to a hermit and appeared among the sculptors to give pointers. After that, he left and disappeared. This time it was a great success. The King and everyone present were in great joy. There was once the Great King Rama V wanted to bring the statue of Phra Buddha Chinnarat to Bangkok at Wat Benchamabophit but the common people in Phitsanulok province begged King Rama V to cancel the invitation because Phra Buddha Chinnarat is an important Buddha image of Phitsanulok province. Therefore, King Rama V decided to create another Phra Buddha Chinnarat in Bangkok instead. On the other hand, “Phra Phuttha Chinna Sri” and “Phra Sri Satsada” were invited to stay at Wat Baworn Nivet. There are 2 devils at both sides of Phra Buddha Chinnarat’s base are “Thao Wet Suwan” and “Arawat Yak” to protect Phra Buddha Chinnarat. The place where the Buddha is sitting is in a beautiful pavilion with an arch in front that was made since Ayutthaya’s period.

The Buddha Image of Northeast in Thailand

Luang Phor Phra Sai

Luang Phor Phra Sai of Wat Pho Chai is an important royal temple in Nongkhai province. The Holy statue was created in “Laan Chang” period where there is an interesting story behind which was associated with 3 princesses of “Laan Chang” kingdom. The King of Laan Chang once ordered his subjects to build a Buddha statue for each of her daughters. He decided to give a name for each Buddha following her daughters’ names. They were “Phra Serm” for firstborn, “Phra Suk” for second daughter and “Phra Sai” for last daughter. Originally, the three Buddha statues had been in Wian Jun city at Laos. In King Rama III period, “Chao Anuwong” who was the king of Wian Jun city at that time rebelled. Therefore, King Rama III ordered “Somdej Phra Bawon Raja Chao Maha Sakphonsep” to stop the rebellion and victory was gained. He invited the 3 Buddha images from “Phu Khao Khwai” in Laos by prayers to stay in Thailand. Next, he arranged the transportation of the Buddha statues by raft made of logs. During the journey to Thailand, a storm arises. Unfortunately, it caused “Phra Suk” to sink into the river. There are only “Phra Serm” and “Phra Sai” left, so “Somdej Phra Bawon Raja Chao Maha Sakphonsep” decided to house “Phra Serm” in Wat Pho Chai and “Phra Sai” in Wat Hor Gong. However, King Rama IV ordered governor of Nongkhai province to invite “Phra Serm” and “Phra Sai” to relocate in Bangkok. Strangely, when they tried to move “Phra Sai”, they were unable to. Elephants were used to move “Phra Sai” but even with the strength of the mighty animals, the Buddha was unable to be moved. Therefore, governor decided to invite “Phra Sai” to stay at Wat Pho Chai with sincere prayers. Amazingly, after the invitation, the elephants were able to move the Buddha “Phra Sai” into the church of Wat Pho Chai. On the other hand, “Phra Serm” was invited to stay in Bangkok at Wat Phathum Wanaram. On every full moon day of the 7th lunar month the people in Nong Khai celebrate “Phra Sai” day by having 'Bun Bong Fai', the rocket contest ceremony or Wat Pho Chai.
