Jatukam Ramathep (shortly called Jatukam) is the god who guards Phra Borommathat Chedi (the important pagoda of Nakhon Si Thammarat province which contains Buddha relics, located at Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan).
In 2530 B.E. (1987 C.E.), there was the construction of the new city pillar of Nakhon Si Thammarat province and Brahmans invited Jatukam Ramathep to obsess in the city pillar in order to bring happiness and peacefulness to the city.
- Jatu means four implying four directions.
- Rama is the seventh avatar of the Hindu God Vishnu.
Therefore, Southern people also believe Jatukam Ramathep is the avatar of Lord Vishnu whose duty is to guard Nakhon Si Thammarat City.
Another belief, Jatukam Ramathep is a soul of king of Nakhon Si Thammarat Kingdom named Phra Jow Jantraphanu who made merit with spontaneous wish to attain Bodhisattva for the benefit of all sentient beings.
Nowadays, Jatukam Ramathep is widely worshiped, believed powerful in everything. According to Srivichai stone inscription, power of Jatukam Ramathep seems the sun and the moon which remove the dark from the earth. Praying to Jatukam Ramathep has 3 conditions:
1. Pray for something possible that is not against the ethics.
2. Keep promise with Jatukam Ramathep after being fulfilled.
3. Should make merit and dedicate to Jatukam Ramathep.
Not only praying to Jatukam Ramathep, but a prayer should also do 3 things: donation, precepts and Phawana (chanting and meditation) in order to be truly propitious for life.
First Jatukam Ramathep amulet was created in 2530 B.E. (1987 C.E.) to celebrate finished city pillar of Nakhon Si Thammarat province by Khun Phantharakratchadet (number 1 buster police) and the committee. First Jatukam Ramathep amulet is regarded precious and very holy because of grand blessing ceremony gathering many famous guru monks of the South.
