Myth about Naga
Naga is also intertwined with the history of Buddha, as seen in various legends where they play crucial roles in protecting and assisting the enlightened one. The story of Phaya Moot-cha-lin, the great Naga who provides shelter to Buddha under the Indian Oaktree, exemplifies the deep connection between Naga and Buddhism.

Buddha Sothon

Buddha Sothon (Luangpho Sothon)

Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan is a must-visit temple for tourists, located in Chachoengsao province alongside Bang Pakong River, initially named Wat Hong and built in late Ayutthaya period. The temple has Luangpho Sothon, the revered Buddha image of Chachoengsao province, which is 1.48 meters tall, with a lap width of 1.65 meters.

Buddha Sothon (well-known as Luangpho Sothon) is the famous Buddha image, situated in the chapel of Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan, Chachoengsao province. For decades, faith in Buddha Sothon has not decreased. People from all regions of Thailand come to pay respect to Buddha Sothon. Thai people believe Buddha Sothon brings security, good luck, wealth and prosperity to people who worship.

History of Buddha Sothon:

Buddha Sothon (Luangpho Sothon) is one of holy Buddha images that accidentally floated along the river before being found such as Luangpho Wat Rai Khing of Nakhon Pathom province, Luangpho Ban Laem of Samut Songkhram province, etc.

There is no evidence about the builder of Buddha Sothon, but old people say this Buddha image originated from one province in the North of Thailand and the legend says three enlightened monks who were brothers transformed themselves to Buddha images: first to Buddha Sothon (or Luangpho Sothon), second to Buddha Ban Laem (or Luangpho Ban Laem) and third to Buddha Toh (or Luangpho Toh).

People told the Buddha image floated along Bang Pakong River (a main river of Chachoengsao province) and stopped in front of Wat Hong (old name of Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan). Crowd tried to pull the Buddha image out of the river, but they failed. Fortunately, there was a special man who knew magic and mantras. He suggested people to build a small spirit house and chant mantra to invite the Buddha image. In process, they put a holy thread around the arms of the Buddha image. With proper method, people could bring up the Buddha image. Then people placed the Buddha image in Phra Wihan (big chapel) of Wat Hong that was later renamed Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan. People call the Buddha image as Luangpho Sothon after the name of temple.

Buddha Sothon has manifested miracles to many prayers such as ones to get over illness, ones to have baby like wishing and others to be fulfilled in their wishes and also saving worshipers’ lives from accidents and dangers.

First Buddha Sothon Medal in Thailand:

The first Buddha Sothon medal in Thailand was released in 2460 B.E. (1917 C.E.) by Phra Arjarn Lin, an acting abbot of Wat Sothonwararam at that time. It has 2 designs: first with clear Yant and second with unclear Yant and is made in 4 different metals: gold, silver, bronze and copper.

Buddha Sothon medal 2460 B.E. is the most popular among worshipers and becomes rare these days. Not only that, the temple has also released several batches of Buddha Sothon medal that are full of holiness as usual.
