Phaya Tao Ruen, a tortoise amulet has played in Thai belief for a long time. In many cultures for example China, a tortoise is believed as a holy animal because it stays under a hard shell, can dive and lives long. Tortoise also relates to Buddha’s story that Buddha was once born as a tortoise. In Thailand, you can see tortoise amulets or sculptures placed in houses and establishments especially a shop mostly wished for wealth. People believe Phaya Tao Ruen amulets can attract windfalls and help them sell well. Also, some people make a wish to tortoise amulets for lottery.
About Guru Monk:
LUANGPHO PRONG (monk name: Chotiko) is a good monk you should know. He is an abbot of Wat Tham Phru TaKian, Chumphon Province and very well-known in Tha Sae District. With his virtues and sacredness, LP Prong is highly respected by a lot of southern people.
LP Prong was born on the 10th February 2473 BE (1930 CE). He got ordained 2 times first at age 20 and second at age 46. The first year after first ordination, he learnt intensive meditation from LP Lim at Wat Noi, Chonburi Province. LP Lim (already passed away) is a monk whom many people admire and respect
Initially, Wat Tham Phru TaKian is the cave on the hill (cave called Tham Pru TaKian). In 2520 BE (1977 CE), LP Prong as a pilgrimage monk came here to do meditation during the Buddhist Lent. When Buddhist Lent was over, LP Prong went back to the North, but usually came here every year.
At that time, it was a rumor that the cave had a python and was full of dangerous animals. However, LP Prong was completely safe during staying in the cave. People in that area saw LP Prong and were impressed by his admirable behavior. In 2528 BE (1985 CE), people requested LP Prong to stay here and together built the small house for him on the hill. LP Prong decided to stay there.
**There was wonder that in 2532 BE (1989 CE), Typhoon Gay attacked Chumphon Province. The huge storm killed many people and destroyed buildings EXCEPT the small wooden house on the hill where LP Prong lived.
LP Prong and people together built the temple. With faith in LP Prong, people were welcome to help him develop the temple. Soon, the temple named Wat Tham Pru TaKian was finished.
LP Prong peacefully passed away on 2 September 2019 at the age of 90.
